What an exciting NYFW this one was! I was a little timid coming to NY this time. As you may remember, my experience last year was really overwhelming and I was literally homesick by the time I left! So this year, I went in with a totally different mentality! Rather than run myself ragged trying to see a million shows and attend every event I was invited to, I decided to just go and have fun! So I invited my mom, and we began NYFW by getting blowouts at IGK Salon, trying out a new vegan cafe, taste-testing cookie dough, and attending the U.S. Open Men’s Semi-Finals! Not exactly your typical fashion week day.
But by day two, I was itching to hit my first show of the week, which was Dion Lee! I had the opportunity to attend some shows this year with the official home fragrance sponsor of NYFW, Capri Blue, so when I arrived at Dion Lee they hooked me up with access to the VIP lounge at the venue. The lounge was filled with candles and diffusers in Capri Blue‘s yummiest scents. Needless to say the space smelled fantastic!!
Post-show, my mom and I grabbed some good old fashioned NY bagels as fuel and walked around checking out the neighborhood around our hotel a bit. Then it was time to get ready for Alexander Wang’s mobile runway show, AKA “#WANGFEST.” Yes, it was really called Wang Fest. Essentially they had a ton of people drive out to a warehouse parking lot in Brooklyn, a bus pulled up, and Bella Hadid, Suki Waterhouse, Joan Smalls, etc. got off and briefly walked the patch of pavement in the middle of everyone. I’ll let you imagine for yourself how that experience was.. Let’s just say I was beyond stoked to get back to my cozy hotel room, light my Exotic Blossom and Basil candle, and sip a cup of chamomile tea before falling asleep. I told you I was all about the very mellow NYFW!!
The next morning I was up early to get ready for my second show with Capri Blue – Vivienne Tam! I was fortunate that Vivienne Tam had offered to dress me for her show, and I’d chosen an outfit from her AW 2017 collection to wear. It was a colorful sweater with a cardigan layered over it, and stretchy, black, scrunched pants. I took over Capri Blue‘s Instagram account on my way to, and during, the show, and I shared some behind-the-scenes looks at what it’s like to arrive at the shows with all the street-style photographers, Vivienne Tam’s SS 2018 collection, and her very unique finale.
It was this day, too, that I swapped roommates, as Brody joined me in New York and my mom left for home. He and I were both in the mood to watch a movie and eat room service for dinner that night, so the following day, September 11, we were up bright and early with plans to visit the zoo! But first, we spent a few hours with the TV on, watching the broadcasted reading of the names of all those who passed away on September 11, 2001 and observing the moments of silence that mark each event that took place that day. It was quite humbling to know that we were just blocks from where the Twin Towers had fallen sixteen years prior. We decided it wouldn’t feel right to be so near Ground Zero on the anniversary and not make the trip downtown to visit the memorial, but we also knew it was packed with people, so we went to Central Park first to check out the zoo and enjoy lunch at the Boathouse overlooking the lake. It was the most beautiful, perfect day in the city.
That evening, we joined our friends at Catch in celebration of the restaurant’s 6th anniversary. It was one of the more fun parties I’ve been to in a little while! Wyclef Jean performed, and a bunch of my girlfriend’s came to meet us for drinks. It was the perfect way to wrap up my time in New York! Tuesday morning, I packed up my bags (and Capri Blue candles, of course) and it was off to the next destination…
